GM Brakes FAQ
How Can I Tell When to Replace My Vehicle's Brakes?
Inspect everything -- the brake pedal, brake fluid, the lines and hoses, the brake assemblies, including the brake pistons and master brake cylinder, and the parking brake. Disc brakes will have brake rotors, brake calipers, and brake pads to check; the rotors should be clamping to the calipers and pads to create the resistance your vehicle uses to slow down and stop. Drum brakes will contain brake drums and brake shoes, and the shoes should be fastening to the drums when you brake.
If any of them seems worn-out or damaged, make the change. Otherwise, take care of it when you see the signs the brakes are going bad. Be sure to use OEM parts for the job, too, not aftermarket.
What are the Symptoms of Brake Failure?
Warning lights on the dashboard, pulling sideways, shuddering, and grinding sounds when braking, weak brake grip, an overly soft or unusually low brake pedal, and longer slowdown and stopping times.
How Much Do Brakes Cost to Replace on Average?
That depends on the part. According to RepairPal, brake rotor replacement runs $290 to $400 or so, while brake caliper replacement runs anywhere from $735 to $875 plus. Brake pad replacement: between $260 and $300, sometimes more; brake drum replacement, $255 to $300, etc.
It can also depend on make and model. Replacing brake pads on a Chevy Silverado 1500, for example? $300 to $375 plus. Brake calipers on a Buick Enclave? $470 or so to $520 or more. Cadillac CTS brake rotors can run $350 plus, GMC Sierra 1500 brake drums, $330 or more, and so on.
